Our quest for a safer car ride...

My first step in making our vehicles a safer place for our kids as well as us was to get Tanner a new "big boy" seat. We decided on the Recaro ProRide in "Envy" (a limey, sherbert green mixed with beautiful shades of tan and brown that I just adore!)

My next step was to secure any potential "projectiles." After reading this horrifying story I've began to look at every loose object in my truck in a whole new light. I don't have a lot of things laying around in the front, but the back is a different story. Here's a before pic of the cargo area in my Yukon (how it typically looks, with the third row seats flipped up)...

That might look like an innocent stroller, emergency kit and drinking water jug to you, but to my newly-opened-eyes those are possible deadly projectiles that could very likely go flying at my babies who are sitting just inches away.

I invested in a pack of 4 bungee cords (2-30" and 2-36") for $3.88 at Walmart and here's the after...

(The aqua colored thing in front of the stroller is my sling that I found under the stroller, lol)
I'm not done securing the little things up front, but this is a huge step in the right direction :)

UPDATE: I was afraid that the high temperatures that we get here in Arkansas in the summer would degrade the bungee cords so I've since switched to non-stretchy tie downs. Also, it's worth noting that a water jug made of a sturdier material is necessary if you want it to last longer than 3 months in the back of a hot vehicle...the one shown in the pics became brittle and cracked, soaking the back of my truck :( I am worried about the risk of toxins leeching into the water from any plastic jugs but in an emergency situation I think I'd rather have water just in case...plus, it's main purpose isn't for consumption, it is to use if our vehicle breaks down and is overheating (or if we pass someone in the same unfortunate situation)
